I was at a short seminar today, and something that was said, reminded me that I’d been a little lax in my function as Director of the company.
I get so busy producing my product on a daily basis that I “forget” to have an overall view of the company as a whole.
I remember a few years ago I was operating with a scheduled “Executive Time” once a week, where I’d review the statistics of the company, and make plans for the coming week/month/year, and review existing ones, and generally sit down and review everything “from above”. This was very successful in helping me plan to expand the company.
Then I got busy…. And my weekly Executive Time flew out the window, and hasn’t been instituted since. Needless to say, the planning has also gone by the wayside, and so I’m just working day by day, with no overview of what’s happening with the big picture.
So, I’ve resolved to bring back the Executive Time. I had a review of what’s been happening, and put some planning in motion to bring back the expansion plans! Great fun!
Another thing that I was reminded of in this seminar, was to schedule all the necessary actions in my week.
Most one-man-bands like me will be familiar with this problem: you have lots of work on, so you just work and work and work. Then the work is all done, but you’ve been so busy working, that you’ve not had the time to do any advertising or promotion, and so the work has now dried up, and you need to start promoting like crazy to get some more customers, because you don’t have enough right now.
Rather than go through this roller coaster, why not build in some time in your schedule to do a daily/weekly promotion or advertising? That way you will maintain a steady stream of customers!
I sometimes need to remind myself that I’m not just the “bookkeeper”, but I’m also the company Director, with a whole company to look after, which includes all the functions you’d have in any company: legal, reception, marketing & promotion, sales, accounts, quality control, and PR. Scheduling all those functions into my week, helps to stay on top of it – well, unless you get new regulations, such as DPR, which took 2 whole days out of my busy week last month!
Anyhow, why not make yourself a schedule for the week, and see what happens?
Give it a try!
As always, keep it simple and… Flourish and Prosper 🙂
